The Frame Museum

In the "Alte Haus" F.G. CONZEN presents a unique collection of historical frames spanning Gothic to Art Nouveau.

The "Alte Haus" on Bilker Strasse was built by the Elector Karl Theodor during Duesseldorf's period of expansion at the end of the 18th century. In 1959 the Conzen family purchased the premises from the city of Duesseldorf and restored them to a meticulous standard. As far as possible, the old stucco was renovated and an original 18th century staircase installed in the house.

It hosts a unique collection of original frames from six centuries and many countries, compiled and collected by the Conzen family. The range of eras includes Gothic, Renaissance, Mannerism, Baroque, Rococo, Empire, Biedermeier, Historism and Art Nouveau and offers a near complete scope of this area of applied arts. The oldest frame dates back to 1480.

The "Alt-Duesseldorf" collection also reflects the senior manager’s collecting passion. F.G. Conzen compiled this unique collection of old views and engravings of Duesseldorf, partially mounted in their contemporary frames. The oldest engravings are from 1587 depicting the electoral wedding of Duke Johann Wilhelm and Margrave Jakobe of Baden.

There is also a copper engraving by Matthias Merian from the "Topographie Westphalen" (1647). The collection in the "Alte Haus" is complemented by antiques, for example English furniture, which are also for sale. Periodic exhibitions provide further interest.

The main attraction of these exhibitions is the combination of old and new works of art; the contemporary works are in part presented in historical frames.
